Medicare did not cover acupuncture at all until 2020, when it added it for chronic low-back pain — one of the program's newest benefits. On the fee-for-service record, the 2024 count was about 144,000.

A benefit that did not exist six years ago. Coverage began in 2020, for chronic low-back pain only. The ramp from 2019 reflects a benefit being switched on, not rising demand within a service that was already there.

The service is new enough that its coding is still settling. Billing patterns for a young benefit shift as providers learn the codes, so early-year and later-year counts are not strictly like-for-like.

Counting acupuncture visits — initial-encounter claims — on the Medicare fee-for-service record, then scaled to total Medicare enrollment (the estimated total). A visit is one encounter, not one patient; a person seen repeatedly counts each time. Providers also bill additional 15-minute add-on lines within a visit; counting every billed service line, initial plus add-on, the 2024 total is an estimated 639,000. The scaled figures are estimates: the calculation assumes Medicare Advantage per-capita utilization ≈ fee-for-service; MA plans may manage utilization differently. Zero before 2020.
